3 Diseases You Can Get From Mold Exposure

Mold is a widespread type of fungus; it's found indoors, outdoors, in the air, and on surfaces, but it doesn't grow unless it finds moisture. When mold finds a moist environment, like your bathroom, basement, or laundry room, it multiplies, and these large quantities of mold can be dangerous to your health, without you even realizing that the mold is there. Here are three diseases you can get from mold exposure.

Asthma is a chronic disease that causes swelling in the tissues that line your airways. This narrows the airways and makes it harder for you to breathe. It causes problems like wheezing, difficulty breathing, and coughing, and in severe cases, it can be fatal. According to the Centers for Disease Control, exposure to mold can cause asthma in children, especially children with a genetic predisposition to the disease.

Aspergillosis is a lung infection that can develop when you breathe in aspergillus, a very common type of mold. People who have weakened immune systems, such as HIV-positive people, cancer patients, and organ transplant recipients, have a greater risk of developing this infection. This is also true if you already have a lung disease, such as cystic fibrosis. It causes symptoms that are similar to asthma, but it can also cause additional symptoms like coughing up blood and weight loss. It's treated with antifungal medications and corticosteroids, but you can prevent it by getting rid of the overgrowth of mold in your home.

Fungal pneumonia

Pneumonia is a serious lung infection. It causes the air sacs inside your lungs to become swollen and filled with fluid or pus, which makes it very hard for you to breathe. Pneumonia is the most common infectious cause of death in the United States, and is responsible for more deaths than well-known infectious diseases like the flu and HIV.

Fungal pneumonia occurs when you breathe in mold spores, something that is easy to do in a house that contains hidden sources of mold. It gives you a fever, respiratory distress, and a racing heart, along with more serious side affects like meningitis or heart problems.

Mold can be very dangerous and can cause a variety of serious diseases. Mold exposure can make you very sick and in some cases it can even kill you. If you think you might have mold inside your home, hire a contractor that specializes in a mold inspection. They will search your house for signs of mold, and if they find any, they'll get rid of it.
